January/February/March 2018

The Library offers numerous opportunities for teens in Grades 6-12 to earn Community Service Credit such as: reading to young children, assisting adults with their computer or smart device questions, receiving donations at a Food Bank table, and more.  Here are the options currently available (space is limited):

Registration for OCEANSIDE SCHOOL DISTRICT RESIDENTS is now open!!
You may register online or in-person at the Information Desk.  Limit of two Community Service Opportunities per child.


Food Bank Collection (Grades 6-12)
Help collect food donations for Cory Cares.
Sunday, January 28 // Noon-2pm OR 2-4pm
Sunday, February 25 // Noon-2pm OR 2-4pm
Sunday, March 11 // Noon-2pm OR 2-4pm


Keva (Grades 9-12)
Teens will help young builders with Keva planks.

Lego Club (Grades 9-12)
Teens will help young builders join the Lego fun.

Teen Advisory Group (TAG) Meetings (Grades 6-12)
Our TAG group will meet.  Refreshments will be served.

Teen Tech Tutor (Grades 6-12)
Oceanside teens will help patrons with their devices, like the iPhone, iPad, and other tablets.

Dog Toys For Charity (Grades 6-12)
Make a toy for a dog in need.
Monday, February 5 // 7-8pm

Organ Donor Registration (Grades 6-12)
It’s National Organ Donor Day.  Help our patrons register to be an organ donor.
Wednesday, February 14 // 3-6pm OR 6-9pm

Dr. Seuss Day (Grades 6-12)
Help is needed in the Children’s Room for this annual celebration.
Sunday, March 4 // 12-4pm

Habitat For Humanity (Grades 6-12)
Help decorate a Habitat For Humanity home with art deco creations!  Items will be donated to a deserving home.
Monday, March 19 // 7-8pm

You may register for the following ‘Tween and Teen programs in person at the Information Desk.  If there is no fee attached, you may call 516-766-2360, x4 to register as well.

Online Program Registration is now available for Oceanside residents!
Beginning with January 2018 registration, patrons will have the convenience of registering online for Children’s, Tween, and Young Adult programs through Oceanside Library’s website.  Please have an updated Oceanside Library card and current email address ready to use for online program registrations.

Chess Club (Grades 4-12)
Wednesdays // 4:30pm
Open chess program on Wednesdays. No prior knowledge of the game required.  Light refreshments will be served.

Study Hall (Grades 7-12)
Need a place to study?  Come and study with friends for finals and regents!

Participants will have fun making an igloo out of marshmallows, frosting, and lots of goodies.

The Whaling Museum of Cold Spring Harbor will help you create your own “I Have A Dream” pillow celebrating the contributions of African-Americans in whaling.

Doodle Bots
Monday, January 29 // 7-8:30pm

Using simple circuits, motors, switches, and batteries, create doodle bot drawing machines.

‘Tween Scene (Grades 4-8): Nacho Dip In A Cup
Thursday, February 1 // 7-8pm

Using fresh salsa, guacamole, cheese, and beans, we’ll make a delicious nacho dip in a cup.

Chocolate Bark
Thursday, February 8 // 7-8pm

Make a delicious chocolate bark adding lots of candy treats to take home.

Oceanside High School Cheerleading Team
Thursday, February 15 // 7-8pm

Under the leadership of Coach Samantha Chaback, come meet the OHS Cheer team and learn some cheers, chants, and dances!

Play In A Day
Tuesday, February 20 // 10am-1pm

Create a Play In A Day by choosing a theme, using improve, and theatrical exercises to develop a story that you will put on.

Mother/Daughter Henna Workshop
Tuesday, February 20 // 7-8:45pm

Learn about the art and history of henna from India with Minal Mehta.  Mix and create your own designs and apply the henna that will last for about two weeks.  A B.O.B. program.

‘Tween Scene (Grades 4-8): Candy Parfait
Thursday, February 22 // 4-5pm

Use bright colors and sparkles to make your own galaxy slime.


Movie Classic & Pizza
Friday, February 23 // 1-3pm
Friday, March 9 // 6:30-8:30pm

From a selection of classic titles like The Outsiders, Grease, Back to the Future or The Karate Kid, you will choose a movie to watch while enjoying some pizza.

Virtual Reality
Monday, March 5 // 6:30-8:30pm

Using a smartphone, iPhone or Android, connect to a VR box and experience virtual reality.

Irish Soda Bread

Celebrate the Irish in all of us by making a delicious traditional Irish soda bread just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

‘Tween Scene (Grades 4-8): Cookies & Canvas
Thursday, March 22 // 7-8:30pm

Recreate a painting step-by-step with directions from instructor Kathy Schirrmacher.  Refreshments will be provided.

If you are doing research for school reports, extra credit, or simply out of personal interest, the Library provides many useful databases that you can access from home as well as in the Library.  Go to our Research Databases page and select your topic of interest, ranging from history and current events to literature, science, health, art, music, biography, and practice tests.


GAME ON!!
Video games for Wii, Wii U, XBOX360, XBOX One, and Playstation 4 are located in the Young Adult Department.  Oceanside School District residents (7th grade or older) may check out up to two titles at a time for a 7 day loan period.
