June/July/August 2018

The Library offers numerous opportunities for teens in Grades 6-12 to earn Community Service Credit such as: reading to young children, assisting adults with their computer or smart device questions, receiving donations at a Food Bank table, and more.  Here are the options currently available (space is limited):

You may register online, via phone, or in-person at the Information Desk.  Limit of two Community Service Opportunities per child.

Board Games (Grades 6-12)
Tuesday, June 26 // 4-5pm (WAIT LIST ONLY)
Teens will help young children play games.

Read A Story (Grades 6-12)
Mondays, July 9, 16, 23 // 3-4pm
Come listen as boys and girls read their favorite book to you.

Teens n’ Tots Read Together (Grades 6-12)
4 Tuesdays, July 10, 17, 24, 31 // 10-11am
Meet once a week and share the joy of books with a new friend.

Special Needs KEVA (Grades 9-12)
Monday, July 16 // 5 - 6pm
Teens will help young builders with Keva planks.

KEVA (Grades 9-12)

Teen Tech Tutors (Grades 6-12)
Fridays, July 20, 27 & August 3 // 10-11am
Oceanside teens needed to help patrons with basic tech device questions.

Teens will help young builders join the LEGO fun!

Whaling Museum (Grades 6-12)
Monday, July 30 // 5-7:30pm (WAIT LIST ONLY)
Teens will help young children with crafts presented by the Whaling Museum.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION!!
You may register online, via phone, or in-person.  Payment is due within 3 days of registering.  Pay at the Information Desk in person.  We accept cash (exact change if possible please!) or check made payable to Oceanside Library (unless otherwise noted).  Fees are non-refundable.  Participants in the same class require separate checks.

Chess Club (Grades 4-12)
Wednesdays // 4:30pm
Open chess program on Wednesdays. No prior knowledge of the game required.  Light refreshments will be served.

'Tween Scene: Rainbow Rocks (Grades 4-8)
Wednesday, June 20 // 7-8pm
Create several rainbow marbled-color rocks using paint and nail polish to celebrate “Library Rocks” and Pride month.

Book Discussion: Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli (Grades 6-12)
Thursday, June 21 // 7-8pm

Before we show the movie Love, Simon on Saturday, June 23 at 1:30pm, join us for a lively discussion of the book . Refreshments will be served.

Rainbow Canvas (Grades 6-12)
Monday, June 25 // 7-8pm
Create your own unique rainbow canvas painting with a glitter heart in the middle to celebrate Pride month.

World Cup Live!
(Grades 6-12)
Wednesday, June 27 // 2pm
Enjoy a light Brazilian lunch while watching the Brazil vs. Serbia match.

For Special Needs Teens: Oreo Dirt Cake (Grades 6-12)
Wednesday, June 27 // 7-8 pm
Measure and mix all the ingredients to make a delicious cake topped with crushed Oreos and gummy worms.

Anime Club (Grades 6-12)
Mondays, July 2, 23, August 6 // 7-8pm
Discuss your favorite Manga and Anime, share news about the latest books, watch films, and draw your favorite charac­ters. Refreshments will be served!

Sit outside in the garden with a sketch pad for a drawing lesson with Kathy Schirrmacher.

'Tween Scene: Pokémon Double-Feature With Pizza (Grades 4-8)
Saturday, July 21 // Noon - 3:30pm
Join members of the Library’s Anime Club along with other Pokémon fans for a screening of the first two feature-length Pokémon movies, Pokémon The First Movie and Pokémon The Movie 2000, along with pizza. You do not have to be a member of the Anime Club to attend.

'Tween Scene: 3D Brazilian Soccer Ball (Grades 4-8)

See how to make a soccer ball in 3D and paint your own soc­cer ball to take home.

Drones (Grades 6-12)

The Cradle of Aviation will show us how drones are taking over our skies. Students will learn how they work, what they are being used for and even try flying one.

Family Book Cake Workshop
(Grades 6-12)
Thursday, August 2 // 7-8:30pm
Using our One Book-One Oceanside as our template, each family will decorate a ¼ sheet cake with fondant, butter­cream, and icing. Must bring a rolling pin and large bowl.

Puzzle And Pizza
(Grades 6-12)

Let’s put together a Rock ’n’ Roll puzzle. Pizza and soda will be served.

Flour Shoppe Baking Class
(Grades 6-12) (CLASS FULL, WAIT LIST ONLY)

Join us at the Flour Shoppe in RVC for some baking fun. Meet at 486 Sunrise Hwy., Rockville Centre.

'Tween Scene: Edible Cookie Dough Cones (Grades 4-8) (CLASS FULL, WAIT LIST ONLY)
Thursday, August 9 // 4-5pm
Why wait on line in NYC to try edible cookie dough when you can learn to make it from scratch. Make your dough and mix in some of your favorite toppings like sprinkles, M&M’s, gummy bears, Oreos and more.

Anime Club Presents: Movie With Pizza (Grades 6-12)

Join members of the library’s Anime club along with other anime fans to watch and enjoy the Anime movie Summer Wars with pizza.

If you are doing research for school reports, extra credit, or simply out of personal interest, the Library provides many useful databases that you can access from home as well as in the Library.  Go to our Research Databases page and select your topic of interest, ranging from history and current events to literature, science, health, art, music, biography, and practice tests.


GAME ON!!
Video games for Wii, Wii U, XBOX360, XBOX One, and Playstation 4 are located in the Young Adult Department.  Oceanside School District residents (7th grade or older) may check out up to two titles at a time for a 7 day loan period.
