The Library offers numerous opportunities for teens in Grades 6-12 to earn Community Service Credit such as: reading to young children, assisting adults with their computer or smart device questions, manning a Food Bank table, and more.  Students may sign up at the Information Desk or by calling (516) 766-2360, option 4.  Here are the options currently available (space is limited):

Booker’s Birthday Celebration (Grades 7-12)
Saturday, October 21 // 11am – Noon
(WAIT LIST ONLY) OR 1-2pm (WAIT LIST ONLY)
Help our Children’s Room librarians as they celebrate Booker’s birthday with crafts, paintings, and mosaics.


Food Bank Collection (Grades 6-12)
Help collect food donations for Cory Cares.
Sunday, October 8 // Noon – 2pm

Keva (Grades 9-12)
Teens will help young builders with Keva planks.

Chess Club (Grades 4-12)
Wednesdays // 4:30pm
No class on Wednesday, September 20.  Open chess program on Wednesdays. No prior knowledge of the game required.  Light refreshments will be served.

Online Program Registration Coming Soon!
Beginning in November 2017, patrons will have the convenience of registering online for Children’s, Tween, and Young Adult programs through Oceanside Library’s website.  Please have an updated Oceanside Library card and current email address ready to use for November program registrations.  We will be offering demonstrations on how to register for programs online, the evening of September 6th.

'Tween Program: Cooked To Perfection (off-site program) (WAIT LIST ONLY)
Thursday, September 28 // 5-6:30pm // Fee: $15

Create a delicious three-course Spanish meal from scratch.  A B.O.B. program.  Located at 49 Main Street, East Rockaway.

Babysitting Workshop (Grades 6-12) (WAIT LIST ONLY)
Thursday, October 5 & Friday, October 6 // 4-6pm // Fee: $2

Become a successful babysitter in this two-part workshop.  Registered nurses JoAnn Tanck and Georgette Basso will teach the essentials of infant and child care in Part I.  Home safety will be taught by Oceanside firefighters in Part II.  Certificates will be issued to those who attend both sessions.  Please bring a large, soft doll to the first class.  Sponsored by Oceanside Kiwanis Club.

Clean Up Your Social Media (Grades 6-12)
Thursday, October 5 // 7-8pm

What does your social media say about you?  Lisa Kornberg, educator and college interviewer, will give you tips on how to maintain a clean social media identity before you apply to college or go on job interviews.

Self-Esteem For Girls (Grades 5-8)
Saturdays, October 7, 14, 21 & 28 // 10:30-11:30am

Join Girl Scout Skye Margies as she conducts this multi-session program on increasing self-esteem and confidence in girls.  Presented as part of her Gold Award project.

Special Needs Chocolate Night (Grades 4 – High School)
Thursday, October 12 // 7-8pm

Melt chocolate and dip your favorite goodies – Oreos, pretzel rods, potato chips, and fruit.  Caregiver must be present.

Chicken Pasilla Empanadas (Grades 6-12)
(WAIT LIST ONLY)
Monday, October 16 // 7-8pm

Create a traditional Spanish chicken dish.  Combine chicken, pasilla chile, corn, onion, and cheese and fill pastry puffs to make a delicious Spanish empanada.  A B.O.B. program.

College Admissions Timeline (Grades 7-12)
Thursday, October 19 // 7-8pm // Parents Welcome

Start early and follow a timeline to maximize your chances for college admissions.  Take the right steps each year in high school.  For parents and students.

Sea Turtle Celebration
Saturday, October 21 // 2pm // No Registration Required

Have you ever wondered if there were sea turtles in New York waters?  Would you know what to do if you saw one on the beach?  Researchers from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation will teach you how you can help save these animals.  Once you attend this lecture, you can sign up to become a registered beach walker and help the Riverhead Foundation save cold stunned sea turtles!  Light refreshments will be served.

'Tween Program: Candy Apples (WAIT LIST ONLY)
Thursday, October 26 // 7-8pm

Dip your apple with candy, caramel or chocolate and decorate with crunches, sprinkles, and Heath bars.

If you are doing research for school reports, extra credit, or simply out of personal interest, the Library provides many useful databases that you can access from home as well as in the Library.  Go to our Research Databases page and select your topic of interest, ranging from history and current events to literature, science, health, art, music, biography, and practice tests.


GAME ON!!
Video games for Wii, Wii U, XBOX360, XBOX One, and Playstation 4 are located in the Young Adult Department.  Oceanside School District residents (7th grade or older) may check out up to two titles at a time for a 7 day loan period.
