The Library offers numerous opportunities for teens in Grades 6-12 to earn Community Service Credit such as: reading to young children, assisting adults with their computer or smart device questions, receiving donations at a Food Bank table, and more.  Here are the options currently available (space is limited):

You may register online, via phone, or in-person at the Information Desk.  Limit of two Community Service Opportunities per child.

Food Bank Collection (Grades 6-12)
Sunday, March 24 // Noon-2pm OR 2-4pm // Registration Required

Help collect food donations for Cory Cares.

Teen Advisory Group (Grades 6-12)
Thursday, March 28 // 7pm // Registration Required

Our Teen Advisory Group (TAG) will meet.  Refreshments will be served.

Meet & discuss young adult ideas for the library.  Refreshments will be served.

Baby Blankets (Grades 6-12)
Monday, May 6 // 4-5pm

Measure, cut, and knot baby patterns to make a no sew blanket to be donated to mothers in need.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION!!
You may register online, via phone, or in-person.  Payment is due within 3 days of registering.  Pay at the Information Desk in person.  We accept cash (exact change if possible please!) or check made payable to Oceanside Library (unless otherwise noted).  Fees are non-refundable.  Participants in the same class require separate checks.

Chess Club (Grades 4 – High School)
Wednesdays // 4:30pm

Open chess program.  No prior knowledge of the game required.  Snacks will be provided.  Please call the Information Desk: 516-766-2360, option 4 for the most up to date information on club dates.

Anime Club  (Grades 6-12)

Discuss your favorite Manga and Anime, share news about the latest books, watch films, and draw your favorite characters.  Refreshments will be served!

Falafel
(Grades 6-12)
Thursday, March 28 // 7pm //
Registration Required
Participants will measure, chop, and combine all the ingredients to make delicious falafels.  Then we will fry them and enjoy them with pita, tomato, and hummus in a sandwich.
A Beyond Our Borders (aka B.O.B.) Program

Celebrate National Poetry Month!
Throughout the month of April, choose your favorite Young Adult verse book.  Bonus points for telling us your favorite poet.  Random winners will be chosen for prizes.  Visit the Information Desk for more details.

Decorate a wooden bird house using mosaics, glue, and paint.

Read a poem aloud.  Write your own poem to share.  Express yourself just for fun!  Refreshments will be served.

‘Tween Scene: Body Scrub For Mom (Grades 4-8)
Thursday, May 2 // 7pm

Create a lovely sugar body scrub and take it home in a jar.  Scrubs feature sugar, organic coconut oil, sprinkles, and vanilla essential oil.  Just in time for a Mother’s Day gift.

Teen Special Needs Program: Mother’s Day Spa Gift (Grades 4 – High School)
Thursday, May 2 // 7-8pm

Customize your own natural body or foot scrub.  Ms. Kathy will demonstrate how to make a body or foot scrub using different scented essential oils.  Participants will then pick a scent and make their own scrub and put it in a jar and decorate with ribbon.  Holiday-themed scents available.  Great as a gift or to keep for yourself.  Some scents include coconut, lemon, vanilla, peppermint, lavender, and more!

See original videos by some of Oceanside’s brightest young filmmakers.  Light refreshments will be served.

Star Wars Spelling Bee
(Grades 6-12)
Saturday, May 4 // 11am

Test your knowledge of Star Wars against your friends and become the Star Wars Spelling Bee Champion.  Prizes will be awarded.  Refreshments will be served.

GAME ON!!
Video games for Wii, Wii U, XBOX360, XBOX One, and Playstation 4 are located in the Young Adult Department.  Oceanside School District residents (7th grade or older) may check out up to two titles at a time for a 7-day loan period.  NOTE: Nintendo Switch games now available!!
