The Library offers numerous opportunities for teens in Grades 6-12 to earn Community Service Credit such as: reading to young children, assisting adults with their computer or smart device questions, manning a Food Bank table, and more.  Students may sign up at the Information Desk or by calling (516) 766-2360, option 4.  Here are the options currently available (space is limited):

Food Bank Collection (Grades 6-12)
Help collect food donations for Cory Cares.

Chess Club (Grades 4-12)
Wednesdays // 4:30pm

No matter your skill level (or even if you’ve never played) come join us any Wednesday.  We’ll supply the boards, the pieces – and will help you have fun and enjoy this centuries-old game of skill and strategy!

‘Tween Scene (Grades 4-8): Birdhouse Crafting (WAIT LIST ONLY)
Thursday, April 20 // 7-8pm

Paint, color, and stencil a wooden birdhouse.  Bird food supplied.  Can be used outdoors or for decoration.

Movie/Pizza (Grades 6-12)
Friday, April 21 // 6:30-8:45pm

Watch the latest film from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.  Pizza will be served.

How To Find Great High School Internships (Grades 7-12)
Monday, April 24 // 7-8pm

Lisa Kornberg discusses how to use networking and search techniques to find great internships, as well as potential careers, and college application tips.

Mother’s Day Ceramic Workshop (Grades 6-12)
(WAIT LIST ONLY)
Thursday, April 27 // 6:30-8:30pm & Thursday, May 4 // 7:30-8:30pm

In this two-night workshop, create a ceramic basket using clay.  Glaze your piece once it has been fired.  Pieces will be available for pickup on Thursday, May 11, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Babysitting Workshop (Grades 6-12)

LinkedIn For Students – Online Networking (Grades 7-12)

Knowing how to use LinkedIn effectively can open the doors to a great internship as well as college acceptances.  This workshop will teach you how to create a LinkedIn profile that will impress.

President Donald Trump: The First 100 Days (Grades 6-12)
Wednesday, May 10 // 7-8pm

Dr. Margaret Gray, Chair of the Political Science Department at Adelphi University, will lead this discussion on President Trump’s first 100 days in office.  Come share your (respectful) opinions.

Invention Convention
Saturday, May 13 // 1-3pm

See the inventions of our Project Extra students.  It’s a great way to see the work of some of Oceanside’s top students, to learn something new, and to be inspired!  No registration required.

Manage Your Money (Grades 7-12)
Thursday, May 18 // 7-8pm

Learn how to manage your bank accounts, debit cards, and paychecks with Linda Roldan of The First National Bank of Long Island.

‘Tween Scene (Grades 4-8): Homemade Hot Pretzels (WAIT LIST ONLY)
Monday, May 22 // 7-8pm

Participants will measure, mix, and knead dough, then shape their pretzel.  Flavor with butter, salt, or cinnamon.

If you are doing research for school reports, extra credit, or simply out of personal interest, the Library provides many useful databases that you can access from home as well as in the Library.  Go to our Research Databases page and select your topic of interest, ranging from history and current events to literature, science, health, art, music, biography, and practice tests.


GAME ON!!
Video games for Wii, Wii U, XBOX360, XBOX One, and Playstation 4 are located in the Young Adult Department.  Oceanside School District residents (7th grade or older) may check out up to two titles at a time for a 7 day loan period.
