The Library offers numerous opportunities for teens in Grades 6-12 to earn Community Service Credit such as: reading to young children, assisting adults with their computer or smart device questions, receiving donations at a Food Bank table, and more.  Here are the options currently available (space is limited):

You may register online, via phone, or in-person at the Information Desk.  Limit of two Community Service Opportunities per child.

Lego Club (Grades 9-12)
Tuesday, January 22 // 6pm // Registration Required

Teens will help young builders join the LEGO fun!

No Sew Fleece Hats (Grades 6-12)
Thursday, January 24 // 7-8pm // Registration Required

Participants will each make a hat to donate.  They will cut, knot, and tie to make a toddler or children’s size hat.  Hats will be donated to Ronald McDonald House.

Food Bank Collection (Grades 6-12)
Sunday, January 27 // Noon-2pm OR 2-4pm // Registration Required
Sunday, February 10 // Noon-2pm OR 2-4pm // Registration Required
Sunday, March 24 // Noon-2pm OR 2-4pm // Registration Required

Help collect food donations for Cory Cares.

Teen Advisory Group (Grades 6-12)

Our Teen Advisory Group (TAG) will meet.  Refreshments will be served.

Keva (Grades 9-12)

Teens will help young builders with Keva planks.

Totes For Charity
(Grades 6-12)
Monday, February 23 // 4pm // Registration Required

Teens can choose from hundreds of stencils to write special messages of hope onto canvas tote bags.  We will also fill them with a few much needed items.  Totes will be donated to the Homeless Coalition.

Meals On Wheels Placemats
(Grades 6-12)
Thursday, March 21 // 4pm // Registration Required

Using special paper, vintage books & more, teens will create placemats for adults who participate in Meals On Wheels.  We will also laminate them for a long lasting effect.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION!!
You may register online, via phone, or in-person.  Payment is due within 3 days of registering.  Pay at the Information Desk in person.  We accept cash (exact change if possible please!) or check made payable to Oceanside Library (unless otherwise noted).  Fees are non-refundable.  Participants in the same class require separate checks.

Chess Club (Grades 4 – High School)
Wednesdays // 4:30pm

Open chess program.  No prior knowledge of the game required.  Snacks will be provided.  Please call the Information Desk: 516-766-2360, option 4 for the most up to date information on club dates.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Grades 6-12)

All past Super Smash Bros. fighters join the battle.  Players muse use different attacks to weaken their opponents and knock them out of an arena.

Chinese Silk Painting
(Grades 6-12)
Tuesday, January 29 // 7pm //
Registration Required
Paint your own strip of silk using traditional Chinese techniques honoring Chinese New Year.

Anime Club
 (Grades 6-12)
Wednesdays, January 30, February 6, March 13, 27 //

Discuss your favorite Manga and Anime, share news about the latest books, watch films, and draw your favorite characters.  Refreshments will be served!

‘Tween Scene: Football Jersey Cookies (Grades 4-8)

Just in time for the Super Bowl.  Decorate four to take home!

‘Tween Scene: Milk Science (Grades 4-8)
Monday, February 4 // 7pm //
Registration Required
Children will make milk plastic and milk glue that they can take home.  Learn how milk becomes a homogenous mixture.  Hot plates will be used to make this chemical reaction in this STEM program.

SAT Review Class
(Grades 6-12)
Thursdays, February 7 – March 7 // 6:30pm //
Registration Required // Fee: $85
Prepare for the SAT with certified instruction in Math and English.  An $85 check payable to Laura LaVacca is due at registration.  Each student is required to bring the College Board Official SAT book (2018 edition) and a calculator.

‘Tween Scene: Chocolate Pancakes (Grades 4-8)
Monday, February 11 // 7pm //
Registration Required
Prepare the batter from scratch and cook this delicious breakfast treat.  Top with whipped cream, marshmallows, and chocolate syrup or go with traditional maple syrup!

Anime Movie & Pizza Night
(Grades 6-12)

Join us for an Anime feature film while enjoying some pizza.

Winter Cupcakes

Make and decorate delicious cupcakes to enjoy and share!

‘Tween Scene: Pot-Of-Gold Cupcake (Grades 4-8)

Teens will create a Pot-Of-Gold Cupcake, plus one other cupcake to decorate and eat.

Shamrock Pretzels
(Grades 6-12)

Measure and mix dough and then shape into a shamrock.

Western Wall
(Grades 6-12)

Recreate one of the most significant sites in the world using watercolors and write your own inspirational message on a brick.
A Beyond Our Borders (aka B.O.B.) Program

Falafel
(Grades 6-12)

Registration Required
Participants will measure, chop, and combine all the ingredients to make delicious falafels.  Then we will fry them and enjoy them with pita, tomato, and hummus in a sandwich.

GAME ON!!
Video games for Wii, Wii U, XBOX360, XBOX One, and Playstation 4 are located in the Young Adult Department.  Oceanside School District residents (7th grade or older) may check out up to two titles at a time for a 7 day loan period.  NOTE: Nintendo Switch games coming very soon!
