OverDrive Downloadable Audiobooks

We are pleased to announce that the Library has added OverDrive downloadable audiobooks to our collection, enabling patrons with a valid Oceanside Library card to check out and download popular books to their PC or laptop, transfer them to a wide range of portable media players, or burn selected titles to a CD.  Patrons may check out up to five titles at a time, and at the end of the seven day lending period, the audiobooks will expire from their PC and be returned automatically to the digital collection.  The service is free, easy-to-use, and available anywhere, anytime.  Juggling CDs and cassette tapes will be a thing of the past with this exciting new expansion of library service into the digital world.  Click here to access the collection.

In addition to our large collection of fiction, non-fiction, and reference material for children, young adults and adults, we offer an outstanding selection of CDs, DVDs, books-on-tape, books-on-CD, and video-cassettes. Computers with MS Word, MS Works, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, WordPerfect 9, and Internet access are available for use in the Library. We offer concerts, book discussions, lectures, workshops, courses including Defensive Driving, films, displays and art exhibits, as well as entertaining and informative youth programs throughout the year. Wireless Internet Access


We are pleased to offer wireless Internet access to our patrons, allowing anyone with a wireless-enabled laptop to access the Internet anywhere in the building without having to wait for a public computer.  Wireless users must  agree to abide by the Library's Wireless Internet Access Policy. 
 
 

Museum Pass Program


To make the museum experience accessible to all of our residents, this exciting program enables Oceanside Library cardholders (age 18 or older) who are in good standing to reserve passes to world class museums in the metropolitan area.  Patrons will be able to visit these museums free of charge.

Museums included in this program are:

Passes, which may be borrowed for up to three days, can be reserved no more than one month in advance.  NOTE: Patrons may only borrow one pass per museum and per family within a 30 day period.  The fine for an overdue pass is $5.00 per day.  If a pass is lost, the replacement cost is $50.00, and the patron's museum pass privileges will be suspended for three months.  If a patron loses two passes, his/her museum pass privileges will be revoked.

Passes may either be returned to the Library’s Reference Desk (no later than one hour before closing time on the date due) or in the book drop (we will provide you with an envelope).  Reservations can be booked either in-person at the Reference Desk or by telephone at 766-2360, ext. 370.

NOTE: The Brooklyn Children's Museum will be closed until May 2008.  The Museum's pass entitles you to free admission to The Long Island Children's Museum and The Children's Museum of Manhattan.

Computer Access in the Library

Computers are available in the Adult Department to any patrons in grade 7 and up.  You must have valid identification to use the public computers.  Computer users under the age of 18 must complete an application and have it signed by a parent or guardian. The Library will provide up to five (5) printouts free of charge. There will be a charge of ten cents per printout beyond that. Patrons may not bring their own paper.  If you need to use special paper to type a resume, you must notify a librarian before printing. Librarians will assist users in the initial start-up, but cannot provide extended instruction.  Any fee-based services are the responsibility of the patron.

Computers are also available in the Children's Room to holders of library children's cards.  Written parental consent is required.  Permission forms may be obtained at the Children's Reference Desk and will be kept on record there.  With regards to internet access, the library has no control over this research tool and assumes no responsibility for its content, quality, accuracy, or currency.  It is important for parents to be aware that the internet may contain material of a controversial nature.  Therefore, it is a parent's responsibility to monitor their children's selections.

Programs available in both the Adult Department and Children's Room include MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Works, and WordPerfect 9. Internet access is also available.  No additional programs may be downloaded or installed on the public computers.  Computers may not be used to play computer games.

 


 

Your Library Account Online

  • Return to the Library's Home Page (www.oceansidelibrary.com
  • Click on “Online Catalog” 
  • Click on “My Account” 
  • Enter your name and your 14 digit Oceanside Library Card barcode (with no spaces) when prompted.
  • Each time you log in to "My Account," you will be prompted for a PIN number.  The first time you log in, leave the PIN blank and click "SUBMIT."  On the next page, you will be asked to make up a PIN for yourself.  Choose a PIN and enter it twice, then click "SUBMIT."  The system will set your PIN and you will be logged in to your account.
  • Once you log in to “My Account,you can view the items that are checked out on your library card, place and cancel requests, and renew SOME materials.
  • Please remember to log out of your account when you are finished using the catalog.  You can log out by clicking on the "HOME" button or the "LOGOUT" button.

 




Live Librarian Online Service

Live Librarian is a service provided to District residents by the Nassau Library System. Live Librarian is designed to answer basic reference questions and is available from 5-9PM on Sundays and 9-11PM Monday through Thursday. The service enables real-time communication with a Reference Librarian who can assist you with your Internet search or questions regarding the use of electronic resources. Please note that the service does not provide technical computer support or legal, medical, or financial advice.  



Online Practice Tests

The Library offers free and unlimited access to practice tests online through Learning Express. Included are civil service, 4th grade and 8th grade practice, college preparation, GMAT, military, citizenship, teacher certification, and a host of other exams with instant scoring and personalized evaluation. Go to www.learningexpresslibrary.com to find the career or academic test you need and start improving your scores now. Have your library card ready to enter your barcode when prompted. Navigating the Library Website

Free computer instruction...for those who already have basic Internet skills, this class, taught by knowledgeable staff, offers instruction on how to navigate the Library’s website.  The class, which is not a comprehensive Internet course, includes Library databases, the on-line catalog, recommended links and search engines for a wide range of interests, including health, finance, and consumer information.  For further information, call the Information Desk at 766-2360, ext. 365.

 



 

AARP Defensive Driving (50 Years of Age and Older)

All AARP Defensive Driving classes are formed from a waiting list.  Eligible drivers may sign up for future classes at the Information Desk.  We will contact you regarding dates and times of upcoming classes. The current wait time for Oceanside School District residents is 3-4 months.  You may also call the Information Desk to be placed on the waiting list at 766-2360, ext. 365.



 

SHHH (Self-Help For Hard of Hearing People)

Trained SHHH staff facilitates hands-on experience with various assistive devices for the hearing impaired. For a free appointment, call 763-7444. In addition to private consultations, SHHH members meet bi-monthly to explore topics of common interest. The next general meeting will be held at 7:30PM on Thursday, May 8.  Assistive listening devices are available at all meetings.
